How the square meters to square feet conversion works

A foot is defined as exactly 0.3048 meters, so one square foot is 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.09290304 square meters, and one square meter is 1 ÷ 0.09290304 ≈ 10.7639 square feet. To convert, multiply the area in square meters by 10.7639; to go back, multiply square feet by 0.09290304. Because area has two dimensions, the factor is the length factor squared — 3.28084 feet per meter becomes about 10.7639 square feet per square meter, not 3.28. The converter above uses the exact factor in both directions.

Room sizes and listing areas in square feet

A 12 m² bedroom is about 129 sq ft, a 20 m² living room about 215 sq ft, and a 75 m² two-bedroom apartment about 807 sq ft. Listings in the United States and Canada usually quote square feet, while most other countries quote square meters, so converting is often the quickest way to compare a metric listing or floor plan with a home you already know in square feet. For a single room, it is usually simpler to calculate the area from the room's length and width in meters and convert the total once.

Gross and net area: check what the number measures

A converted figure is only as comparable as the area behind it. Gross floor area is usually measured to the outside face of the exterior walls and can include wall thickness, stairwells and shared space; net or usable area counts only the floor inside the rooms. The gap between the two can be 10% or more, and the rules differ between countries and between listing sites. Converting units does not change which area was measured, so before comparing two homes or two plans, confirm that both figures were measured the same way.

Square Meters to Square Feet Converter FAQ

1 square meter equals about 10.7639 square feet. The exact value is 1 ÷ 0.09290304 = 10.76391…, because 1 square foot is defined as exactly 0.09290304 m².

Multiply the area in square meters by 10.7639. For example, 25 m² × 10.7639 = 269.10 sq ft.

Because area has two dimensions. A square meter measures 3.28084 ft on each side, so its area is 3.28084 × 3.28084 ≈ 10.7639 sq ft. Multiplying an area by 3.28 understates it by a factor of about 3.3.

100 m² is about 1,076 sq ft (1,076.39 to two decimal places).

No. Conversion only changes the unit. If one listing gives gross area including the walls and another gives net usable area, the two figures are still not directly comparable after conversion — check how each was measured first.

Either works if you keep enough decimal places. The risk is rounding each side to a whole foot before multiplying: a 4.2 × 3.6 m room is 15.12 m², or 162.75 sq ft, but rounding the sides to 14 × 12 ft gives 168 sq ft. Calculating the area in square meters and converting the total once avoids that.
