How the square feet to square meters conversion works

One square foot is exactly 0.09290304 square meters, because a foot is defined as 0.3048 meters and 0.3048 × 0.3048 = 0.09290304. To convert, multiply square feet by 0.09290304 (about 0.0929); to convert back, divide by the same number or multiply by 10.7639. The converter above uses the exact factor in both directions and rounds the result to four decimal places.

Common home and room sizes in square meters

A 150 sq ft bedroom is about 13.9 m², a 400 sq ft studio about 37.2 m², a 1,000 sq ft apartment about 92.9 m², and a 2,000 sq ft house about 185.8 m². For a rough mental check, divide square feet by 10 and take off about 7% — 1,000 sq ft becomes 100, then about 93 m². Use the exact factor for anything that will be priced, ordered or built.

Listed square footage versus floor area on a metric plan

Square footage on a US listing for a single-family home is commonly measured to the outside of the exterior walls and counts finished, above-grade living space; garages are usually left out and basements are often listed separately. A metric plan from elsewhere may show net internal area measured inside the walls instead. Converting 1,500 sq ft to 139.4 m² gives the same area in different units, but it does not make the two figures measure the same thing — confirm the measurement basis before comparing.

Square Feet to Square Meters Converter FAQ

1 square foot equals exactly 0.09290304 square meters, or about 0.0929 m².

Multiply by 0.09290304. For example, 850 sq ft × 0.09290304 = 78.97 m².

About 185.8 m² (185.81 to two decimal places).

It shouldn’t, as long as you keep the decimals: a 12 × 15 ft room is 180 sq ft, or 16.72 m², either way. Differences come from rounding each side before multiplying. 12 ft is 3.6576 m and 15 ft is 4.572 m; rounding those to 3.7 m and 4.6 m gives 17.02 m², about 0.3 m² too much.

Not necessarily. US listings usually give a gross figure for finished living space, while metric plans may give net internal area. Converting the units does not reconcile the two; check how each was measured.

It uses the exact definition, 1 ft = 0.3048 m, so the only error is the display rounding to four decimal places — far finer than any tape measure can resolve.
