How the DXF converter will work

The planned three-step flow, for when the tool goes live.

  1. Upload the plan image

    You will drop in a JPG, PNG or BMP of a floor plan — a photo of a printed sheet, a flatbed scan, or an image exported from another program.

  2. Pick a conversion profile

    A general profile suits hand sketches and simple layouts; an architectural profile traces measured drawings more aggressively, picking up thinner detail lines.

  3. Download the DXF

    The traced geometry comes back as a DXF file you can open in AutoCAD, BricsCAD, LibreCAD, QCAD or anything else that reads the format.

  • What a DXF file is

    Drawing Exchange Format is Autodesk’s documented interchange format for 2D and 3D drawing data. Nearly every CAD application reads and writes it, which makes it the safest way to move geometry between programs.

  • Raster to vector, explained

    A photo is a grid of pixels with no notion of a wall. Conversion means tracing the edges in that image into vector lines and arcs — geometry that can be snapped to, dimensioned and edited.

  • Editable geometry

    Once a plan is vector, a wall is an entity you can move, extend, trim and measure. In a raster image the same wall is just dark pixels you can only paint over.

  • Scale has to be set afterwards

    An image carries no units. After any conversion you calibrate the drawing in CAD against one known dimension — a door width or a stated room length — before trusting measurements taken from it.

Why convert a floor plan image to DXF

Plans arrive as images far more often than as CAD files — a photograph of a sheet on a wall, a scan from an estate agent, a screenshot from a listing, a PDF export flattened to pixels. All of those are fine to look at and useless to build from, because nothing in them can be measured or edited.

Getting the geometry into DXF puts it back into a form CAD software understands. From there you can set the scale, snap to corners, dimension openings, add layers for services, and hand the file to anyone else in the project without worrying about which application they use.

What tracing can and cannot recover

Automated tracing recovers geometry, not intent. Wall edges, straight runs and clear openings normally come through well. What does not survive is anything the image never encoded: true dimensions, layer structure, room names as data rather than as marks, and the distinction between a load-bearing wall and a partition.

Image quality sets the ceiling. A sharp, high-resolution, evenly-lit scan traces far more cleanly than a phone photo taken at an angle, where perspective distortion alone will skew every dimension. Expect to tidy the result in CAD afterwards — the conversion is a head start on redrawing, not a replacement for reviewing it.

Preparing an image that converts well

Photograph or scan the sheet flat and square-on, filling the frame, with even lighting and no shadow across the drawing. If you are working from a PDF, export it at a high resolution rather than screenshotting it, since a screenshot is limited to whatever your display was showing.

Crop away borders, title blocks and stray annotation before converting, so the tracer is not spending detail on things you will delete anyway. If the plan has a printed scale bar or a stated dimension, keep that in frame — you will need it to calibrate the drawing once it is in CAD.

DXF is an interchange format for CAD drawing data, published by Autodesk and supported by essentially every CAD package. It is what you use when the person receiving your drawing does not run the same software you drew it in.

AutoCAD and its family, BricsCAD, DraftSight, QCAD and the open-source LibreCAD all read DXF, as do most architectural and CAM tools. Several vector illustration programs will import it too, though they may not preserve CAD-specific structure such as layers and blocks.

Not automatically. An image has pixels, not millimetres, so any conversion produces geometry in arbitrary units. You calibrate it in CAD by scaling the drawing against one dimension you know for certain, such as a standard door width or a figure printed on the plan.

A sharp, high-resolution, evenly-lit scan taken square-on to the page, with strong contrast between the lines and the background. Angled phone photos introduce perspective distortion that skews every dimension, and low-contrast or noisy images produce broken and duplicated lines.

It depends on the PDF. One exported from CAD usually still contains vector lines, and many CAD programs can import it directly — AutoCAD has a PDFIMPORT command, for example. A scanned PDF is only an image and needs tracing. Note that this converter preview is planned for JPG, PNG and BMP images, not PDF.

Not on this page. Some desktop tools can do a rough version: Inkscape’s Trace Bitmap turns an image into vector paths that it can save as DXF, and most CAD programs let you insert an image and trace over it by hand. Either way, expect to clean up and scale the result in CAD.
